The history

Whether you arrive from Porta Bifora or you go down from Piazza della Repubblica, after a walk along the historical centre, you will fell like you are taking a plunge in the past strolling down the ancient street running between buildings still bearing visible signs of the different ages.
Very steep especially in the first part of it (the portion that the Cortonese call “La Bucaccia”), Via Ghibellina starts from a little square achieved on the embankment that covered and closed the Porta Bifora from the inner side of the walls; the embankment was removed during the recent archaeological campaign that allowed the reopening of the ancient door.
Via Ghibellina runs along a bend and has the appearance of a typical winding medieval street;: the houses and the buildings that skirt it, even though widened and changed during хv- xvIΙ centuries, show, especially on the lower level, numerous structures from the Middle The most important buildings of the street grow in number as we approach the centre of the town, on the climb along Piazza della Repubblica.
On the right there you will find Vicolo del Fosso and then Vicolo Bacarelli: the latter has the same ancient name of Porta Ghibellina and leads to the nearby Church of San Benedetto.
Our restaurant is located in close proximity to the Renaissance cellars of Palazzo Cattani at number 17, immediately after Vicolo Cattani, completely isolated from the course of the namesake alley.
