The easiest, fastest option to get to restaurant La Bucaccia is to park your car at the Piazzale del Mercato; from there, go through the Porta Bifora gate, an old medieval gate recently re-opened to pedestrians and climb your way up the steep Via Ghibellina. The Piazzale del Mercato parking is the very first you will find driving up the hill from Camucia or Arezzo (through Sodo). The parking is very large and also suitable for coaches. Park under the lime-trees on the tree-lined avenue along the walls, go through the Porta Bifora gate and walk halfway up the steep, cobbled street (locally known as the “ Bucaccia”); our restaurant is on the right hand side.
Alternatively, park your car at the Piazzale del Mercato, enter the gate to Via Guelfa and walk up this street filled with handicraft shops. Before you get to the main square, the Piazza della Repubblica, turn left into the Via Ghini. Our restaurant is 50 metres down the street, on the left-hand side.
Via Nazionale, locally known as the “Rugapiana” is the main street of Cortona. If, before heading to the restaurant, you wish to walk around the old town, park under the Parterre gardens. (Attention: pay for the parking if you park on the blue stripes before 8 pm and again be careful not to park on spaces reserved for residents). Walk in the direction of Piazza Garibaldi, the square with the large obelisque standing at its centre. Then, walk through the street as far as Piazza della Repubblica, dominated by the Palazzo del Comune with its scenic stairway.
There are two arches on the left of the steps: the first opens onto the Via Roma; the second, smaller than the former, is the entrance to Via Ghibellina. Take this street and then, just 100 meters down the hill, you will find our restaurant on the left-hand side.
On return, before you get your car and make your way back home, we suggest a healthy walk through the Parterre garden.
